Bowfin

Bowfin's average length is around 18 to 25 inches and weights around 2-3 pounds on the average.  Its back and sides are olive colored and it has a cream to white colored belly.  An interesting fact about the Bowfin is that it has a partially developed lung which allows it to breathe outside water for several hours.  It also uses this lung when water warms up and in several other scenarios.  The bowfish is virtually unchanged for the last 100 million years.  Common names for the Bowfin are: dogfish, mudfish, lawyer and grindle.  It is commonly found in lakes Huron, Ontario and Erie.

Where To Look For Bowfin

The bowfin is usually found in sluggish water with weedy areas and muddy bottoms.  It spawns in early spring, in the shallows, and remains there for most of the summer and fall season.  In the winter months it moves into deeper waters where it stays almost dormant until the spring.
