Coho Salmon
Average length of the Coho Salmon is between 12 and 26 inches with the average weight between 3 to 8 pounds. It is steel blue to slightly green on the back with bright silver on the sides and a white underside. Common names for Coho Salmon are: silver salmon, sea trout, blueback and coho. It is commonly found in lakes Superior, Ontario, Erie, Huron.
Popular Bait and Lures For Coho Salmon
The best lures for coho are spoons, wobbling plugs and spinners. The most effective live bait are spawn sacs, cut baits, alewifes and smelt.
Where To Look For Coho Salmon
Spring: Fishing the tributary streams of lakes at ice out will likely result in a salmon catch as they follow the large schools of spawning smelt. Use bridges and jetties where the streams meet the lakes. After the spawning run of smelt has ended, you can find them near the surface of cool spring waters.
Summer: As the water warms up they will hide in deep cool waters and are hard to find. Look for them at dawn and dusk when they will feed at the surface briefly, especially when smelt are sighted. Before the fall spawn, they will return to the surface and actively feed making them easier to catch.
Fall: Fall fishing will likely not yield same success as the spring fishing but you should look for them near the mouths of tributaries and use the same technique as you would in the spring.
