Freshwater Drum
Freshwater Drum can reach up to 14 inches (in rivers it can become much larger) and weights up to 15 pounds. (world record was 54.5 pounds) It is gray/silvery or bronze with its head somewhat darker than the rest of its body. Common names for the Freshwater Drum are: sheepshead, croaker, lake drum and grinder. It is commonly found in all of the Great Lakes.
Popular Bait For Freshwater Drum
Most productive way to catch the Freshwater Drum is with live bait, and the best live bait to use for them are mollusks, minnows, worms, cut bait, insect larvae and crayfish.
Where To Look For Freshwater Drum
The best time of the year to fish for freshwater drum is in the late spring (May to June) and again in the fall. During these times they move in schools and are in shallow waters possibly to feed or spawn (spawning has not yet been witnessed by scientists). For the most part they are much less active during the summer and are inactive during the winter.
