Lake Herring
Lake Herring's average length is between 11 and 15 inches and weights up to 2 pounds. It is silvery with pink/purple iridescence. Common names for Lake Herring are: cisco, tullibee, and freshwater herring. It is found in lakes Superior, Ontario, Erie, Huron, Lake Nipigon and Rainy Lake.
Popular Baits And Tackle For Lake Herring
Some of the popular tackle and baits used for Lake Herring are wigglers, wax worms, mayflies, panfish jig, spinners. For winter Lake Herring fishing use tiny jigs and ice flies tipped with a mealworm, grub or a small minnow. Lower the bait to around 10 to 30 feet below the ice.
Where To Look For Lake Herring
Most angling for Lake Herring is done during the winter, through ice. However, there is some open water fishing for Lake Herring but this is generally confined to spring when the Lake Herring are near the surface in large number feeding on the mayflies most likely.
Fish the windy side of the lake over about 30 to 50 feet of water towards late afternoon to sundown and into the night. During summer they will often move into waters of 80 feet deep and more.
