Lake Sturgeon

The average length of Lake Sturgeon is between 3 to 5 feet and can weight anywhere between 10 to 80 pounds.  According to some sources, due to the Sturgeons long lifespan they have been known to grow as large as 12 feet and weight up to a thousand pounds. ( a 22 foot sturgeon was from a river in russia and was estimated to be 200 years old )   It is olivebrown on the back and sides with a white belly.  Common names for the Lake Sturgeon are: freshwater sturgeon, rock sturgeon and smoothback.  It is commonly found in lakes Superior, Erie, Ontario, Huron, Lake Nipigon, Lake Of The Woods and Lake St. Clair.

Popular Baits For Lake Sturgeon

Sturgeon will go for most bait as they are not picky eaters.  Commonly used baits are worms, cut bait, salmon eggs and crayfish.  Do not use Pike as cut bait as sturgeon hate the smell of pike and will avoid it.  Your bait must be on the bottom in order for you to be successful as the Lake Sturgeon are bottom feeders.

Where To Look For Lake Sturgeon

Look for Lake Sturgeon between points at the mouth of a bay or between islands or between a point and an island.
