Pumpkinseed

Pumpkin seeds are usually around 6 to 8 inches and usually weight under 1 pound. (world record is 1.5 pounds)  It's sides are speckeled with orange, blue, yellow and emerald spots while its belly is orange to red-orange.   Common names for Pumpkinseed are: yellow sunfish, common sunfish, bream and sun bass.   It is commonly found in all of the Great Lakes and Rice Lake.

Popular Baits And Lures For Pumpkinseed

Most productive lures for pumpkinseed are small jigs with twister tails, ice spoons, wet flies, small spinners, small streamers, insect patterns and nymph patterns.  The most productive live bait for pumpkinseed are leaf worms, garden worms, grubs, wax worms, maggots, grasshoppers and crickets.

Where To Look For Pumpkinseeds

Spring: Look for them in sun-warmed shallows while they prepare to spawn.  They are most often found on weedy shorlines of lakes, as well as rocky areas or areas where there is gravel. Best time to fish for pumpkinseed in the spring is during the early morning hours.  Spring is also the best time to fish for pumpkinseeds as during the summer and winter months they are much harder to catch.

Summer: Usually by early summer they are finished spawning and they move to deeper waters where they remain trough most of the summer, fall and winter months. The best time to fish for the pumpkinseed in the summer is during the late day hours.

Fall: As in the summer, they will be in deeper waters, but still around gravel and rocky areas and the best way to fish for them is during the late day hours.
