Round Whitefish

Average length of the Round Whitefish is around 12 to 19 inches and weights between 2 to 3 pounds.  It is brown with green tinge on the back and silvery sides and belly.  Common names for the Round Whitefish are: pilot fish, frost fish, and round fish.  It is commonly found in lakes Superior, Ontario, Huron.

Small spoons and spinners, light jigs and beadhead flies work well.  For live bait try snails, leeches or worms.  Remember, this fish has a soft mouth so set your hook very gently.

Where To Look For Round Whitefish

Those found in shallow waters near islands and shores of Lake Huron are locally known as "menominees"  They are bottom feeders, eating eggs of lake trout and other fish as well as insect larvae and small crustetians and other invertebrates. It is usually found in shallow waters in mud and sand flats during the summers. They are also found at the mouths of tributaries and below rapids.  It is of no commercial importance and is seldom caught by sport fishermen.  It is however highly regarded as a food fish by most who have eaten it.
