Sauger
The Sauger's average length is anywhere between 4 to 17 inches with the average weight of around 2-3 pounds. They look very much like walleye except they are smaller and are generally are more brassy color, even almost black in some areas. Common names for the Sauger are: sand pike, river pike, gray pike and gray pickerel. It is commonly found in Lake Of The Woods, Red Lake and Rainy Lake.
Popular Bait and Tackle For Sauger
The most effective live bait for Sauger are minnows, worms, insect larvae, crayfish, tadpoles and frogs. The best lures to use are spinners, wobbly spoons and jigs.
Where To Look For Sauger
Saugers feed both day and night, however night time hours are best for fishing sauger. Look for them in areas with sandy bottoms, mouths of tributaries and just below dams, keeping your lure/bait close to the bottom.
Spring: During the spring sauger tends to be spread throughout the shallows.
Summer: In the summer, once the spawning is completed, they begin to search aggresively for food. They usually hide in big weeds and other aquatic vegetation to lie in wait for smaller fish.
